Unit 3: In-Depth - Portrait and Propoganda
For this topic we learned about how much control artists have over the messages they want to convey. The compositions we create, colors we use, mark making, it all conveys moods and feelings the the audience can pick up and use as context. I chose to do a portrait of Marcello, the man that sells flowers by my house on 88th and 107th. That man never stop smiling through rain, scoring sun, or the cold. He always looks content to be doing his job; he radiates light from his little crooked smile. For my propaganda I was trying to portray how dangerous and laborious his job is. I didn't emphasize the opposite quality as much as try to show opposition but leaving a connection. The compositions have repeated colors and patterns in them, but still portray different moods. "Concrete Jungle" represents an urban area perceived as a challenging place to live. The Miami I have lived in my whole life has been a hot, hardworking city. I have personally felt with and seen others struggle ever day for their living, and seeing this man reemphasizes that in me every day that I pass him.
