Pattern and Design: In-Depth

Image
This is my in-depth project for the second unit. I combined all the ideas I was trying to portray throughout my smaller assignments into one literal big centralized ball. I designed a chair design, and corresponding repeat pattern responding to a "centered" personality. Here I have provided many different angles of the planet interior, exterior and in movement. The suspended sphere has some exterior movement, as it turns, and interior movement of lights. I was inspired by the theory of the overview effect in the documentary "Overview" (2012) by Guy Reid. I first read about the theory in the photography book "Overview" by Benjamin Grant. I first made a repeat pattern of irrigation fields I saw in Grant's book, which represented fertility and growth to me. I translated similar patterns of circles and a similar color pattern onto the globe. I was very inspired by the idea of spreading a new perspective of our home planet "earth". So I created my...

Pattern and Ornament: Small Works #4 - My Chair Design

Image
I modified the reference pattern of the chair from the pattern book into my own design to show my "personality". The green and pink choice of color represent fertility and growth, the shapes of full circles and half circles represent the process of becoming whole and wholeness. What I believe is behind the definition of being centered is growth, quality, wholeness, and the balance between fragility and sturdiness. The chair is made of wood, except for the back support and the cushion is made from leather and fabric. Front View  Side View  Top View  Repeat Pattern

Pattern and Ornament: Small Works #3 - Repeat Pattern for Chair Design

Image
I got my inspiration for my chair pattern off of a satellite picture of your beautiful Earth. The photograph was part of a series of images from a book I own called "Overview: A New Perspective of Earth"by Benjamin Grant. From this book was the firs time I heard about the Overview Effect. My repeat pattern is based off of pivot irrigation fields in Wadi As-Sirhan Basin of Saudi Arabia. The circles represent the the growth (agriculture) that comes from being centered.

This is the chair pattern I chose to communicate my "personality" of Centered. I found the chair pattern to be centered but fragile.   5" Drawing of the Chair Pattern from Plate 242 #4

Pattern and Ornament: Small Works #1 (part 2) - 2D-3D Translation and Recreation

I chose one of my symbols, the female key(above), and translated it to a 3-D figure.  These are the instructions, as well as images of the process of making the sculpture.  This is the original sculpture on the right, and the re-created version on the left.  This is the final product of the 2D-3D translation.

Pattern and Ornament: Wolfsonian FIU- Art and Design in the Modern Age

Image
I was very surprised that I had never seen or heard about this treasure. The building it self was so different from all the modern large art museums that have taken over Miami, and the Wolfsonian FIU was such a nice difference. The building was very art deco which went along nicely with some of the artwork because of the focused art periods. The museum's mission is the use objects to demonstrate the power of persuasive art and design. It is curated to encourage people to see the world in a new perspective and take the past and shape the present and future. The Wolfsonian has a huge collection of aquistions that tell the story of how political, social, and technological changes have formed our present modern world. The museum's ongoing exhibition "Art and Design in the Modern Age" was a great inspiration for pattern and ornaments because of all the details the furniture had and different time periods that influence...
