N. Dolphin WARP

This topic of landscape was a very rich topic which we covered so many different sub-topics. One of the things that stuck to me was the idea of architecture and landscape for humans (which was my group for the outside Cultural Center activity). We make buildings to comfort our needs. I thought of making a building that was living like a human on its own. A concept of all that we create for our needs making it all human, we take over. I chose to use silicone as an organic skin like material that also resembles like organs and the inside of mammals bodies. There are veins all around the body which lead and connect to different parts like paths of our bodies. The top is a brain like system where the audio is coming out. I created the audio by putting together all the different kinds of white noise I deal with daily. For example lots of construction, cars, traffic, people screaming at each other and so on.  For my second small work of this unit I chose to make work responding to the Euphemia city in the Calvino reading. The city was a trading city that was very prosperous and populated. But other than it obviously being a trade city, it was a city where stories were shared among the merchants and travelers. They shared memories other than goods and money. So I wanted to incorporate that idea into my four pieces. The first piece was the sacks of memory. I sewed three sacks out of burlap each; each sack representing a part of the brain that we use for memory (frontal lobe for decision making and remembering, temporal lobe for auditory context and hearing, and occipital lobe for visual processing). The large burlap sacks are very commonly used for carrying several goods. The second piece was woven stepping mat of ignored memories. The second picture is my original map of my route not school. I know my way very well around Miami and can usually map things through my head as I help people get places. This map is not accurate in directions, I just needed to fit it all in. My house is in the top left corner and NWSA is int he bottom of the page in downtown. I added some more information I could remember of my route in the first picture. We chose one sentence from each of our street/garden visit and combined them into a puzzling situation. This is my small world #. It is a street in a box. The shape of the box is used to accentuate the shape of perception of a street, except backwards because the viewer is looking into the smaller end. It is difficult to make out a specific shape because it is only reflections upon clear vinyl inside. This layout was used to describe the relationship of lights upon a wet commercial street. Lights and sound are what represents a street at night. The fact that the imagery inside is not clear, concentrates the audience on the sound as they look for context. The box is meant to be held and looked into, the way a store window is looked into.  The following images are of the front of the box, the street or garden exercise, planning, and video of the inside of the piece.
