Unit 6: Open Project

Image
The last project for this semester was an open project. I chose to continue my success with fabric sculptures. I combined some of my personal interest of dreams in with my interest of sculpture. I have taken advantage of the opportunities in this class and explored with sculpture, even though I am a painting major. I have developed so many knew practices, and checklists in my head when I am brainstorming, viewing other peoples work, and just thinking in general. I have learned so much about things I would have never noticed on my own. For example the landscape topic has completely changed my view on everything around me. I have also tried venturing off into using technology and interactive pieces, rather than just making something that can't be touched on the wall. Audiences are always going to be curious and I have a really big interest with developing something that is tangible for the audience, so I want to explore that. I have learned so much about intention, so now I look at ...

Unit 4: In-Depth Assignment

Image
This topic of landscape was a very rich topic which we covered so many different sub-topics. One of the things that stuck to me was the idea of architecture and landscape for humans (which was my group for the outside Cultural Center activity). We make buildings to comfort our needs. I thought of making a building that was living like a human on its own. A concept of all that we create for our needs making it all human, we take over. I chose to use silicone as an organic skin like material that also resembles like organs and the inside of mammals bodies. There are veins all around the body which lead and connect to different parts like paths of our bodies. The top is a brain like system where the audio is coming out. I created the audio by putting together all the different kinds of white noise I deal with daily. For example lots of construction, cars, traffic, people screaming at each other and so on. I also put in the sound of swallowing to poke at the idea of it being a living buil...

Unit 3: In-Depth - Portrait and Propoganda

Image
For this topic we learned about how much control artists have over the messages they want to convey.  The compositions we create, colors we use, mark making, it all conveys moods and feelings the the audience can pick up and use as context. I chose to do a portrait of Marcello, the man that sells flowers by my house on 88th and 107th. That man never stop smiling through rain, scoring sun, or the cold. He always looks content to be doing his job; he radiates light from his little crooked smile. For my propaganda I was trying to portray how dangerous and laborious his job is. I didn't emphasize the opposite quality as much as try to show opposition but leaving a connection. The compositions have repeated colors and patterns in them, but still portray different moods. "Concrete Jungle" represents an urban area perceived as a challenging place to live. The Miami I have lived in my whole life has been a hot, hardworking city. I have personally felt with and seen others strugg...

Pattern and Design: In-Depth

Image
This is my in-depth project for the second unit. I combined all the ideas I was trying to portray throughout my smaller assignments into one literal big centralized ball. I designed a chair design, and corresponding repeat pattern responding to a "centered" personality. Here I have provided many different angles of the planet interior, exterior and in movement. The suspended sphere has some exterior movement, as it turns, and interior movement of lights. I was inspired by the theory of the overview effect in the documentary "Overview" (2012) by Guy Reid. I first read about the theory in the photography book "Overview" by Benjamin Grant. I first made a repeat pattern of irrigation fields I saw in Grant's book, which represented fertility and growth to me. I translated similar patterns of circles and a similar color pattern onto the globe. I was very inspired by the idea of spreading a new perspective of our home planet "earth". So I created my...

Creative Impulse: In-Depth Piece

Image
I focused on adding detail of the face, but I didn't want to make it look like an actual human yet. I got my inspiration from a plaster bust my mother did in high school. I also added the history of the Olmec heads I later looked up while researching. Simple features that demonstrated so much, but I wanted to work with the opposite of a hard stone. I have been sewing since I was little and really enjoy it, so I thought  could put my skills to work while making fabric heads. I didn't want them to look like puppets so I focused on the simplicity of a head as a whole. I was focused on a slow process of growth from the first head to the continuing pieces. I spent most of my time on quality of the sewing, symmetry and underlying shapes. The green and red shapes are used to represent the different shades we have underlying our skin causing different tones on our face. But once again I still wanted it to look more like a representation of a head, not a model. The process behind the h...

Creative Impulse: Final Projects

This is the process of development from the first head to the latest head. I am planning to keep adding to the development.
