Pattern and Design: In-Depth

This is my in-depth project for the second unit. I combined all the ideas I was trying to portray throughout my smaller assignments into one literal big centralized ball. I designed a chair design, and corresponding repeat pattern responding to a "centered" personality. Here I have provided many different angles of the planet interior, exterior and in movement. The suspended sphere has some exterior movement, as it turns, and interior movement of lights. I was inspired by the theory of the overview effect in the documentary "Overview" (2012) by Guy Reid. I first read about the theory in the photography book "Overview" by Benjamin Grant. I first made a repeat pattern of irrigation fields I saw in Grant's book, which represented fertility and growth to me. I translated similar patterns of circles and a similar color pattern onto the globe. I was very inspired by the idea of spreading a new perspective of our home planet "earth". So I created my own planet representing the same fragility, glow, and life our planet holds. I created an interior form to show the living aspect of a planet, which most people are not conscious of. There are vinyl windows to appeal to the curiosity of the viewer and to want to look in. The outer lining of soft tulle represents the small layer that protects us and holds it all together into one who centered planet, the way ours should be.

I am having trouble my videos, so I will be posting videos soon.
